Bonga

"It's one of the seven wonders of sound!"

The voice of time that passes and never fades. Born in 1942, his songs carry the memory of a continent, the strength of a life marked by exile, struggle and joy all at once. An Angolan icon and living legend, he is one of those artists who seem to have always been there, like a masterpiece in the world's soundstage. His music is wisdom in motion, respect incarnate, a richness that transcends borders and eras. Thirty-two albums, one hundred and seventy songs, and always that gouache, that intensity that thrills crowds. BONGA is Africa talking, laughing, dancing and telling stories.

PROG IS SOMETIMES JUST A PHIL...

Where and when did you first hear it?
It's impossible to date him, as he's always been part of the musical landscape. For over twenty years, his songs have been heard on radio stations like Nova, sometimes confused with those of Victor Démé or Alpha Blondy, but always recognizable. Bonga is an icon, an obvious choice, one of the seven wonders of sound. His track Mona Ki Ngi Xica has spanned the decades, 39 million listens, an indelible imprint. His music is everywhere, like a breath of fresh air.

Their music in 3 words, or more...?
Heir to a father who was a fisherman and accordionist, an athlete turned musician, he understood the power of music at an early age... His voice carries history, his rhythms carry memory. Wisdom. Respect. Richness. Because his timbre brings the experience of a lifetime, a depth that soothes and enlightens. Because her music crosses borders and generations, imposing a rare dignity. Because each song is a world, nourished by history, travel, struggle and celebration.

If this were the soundtrack to a daydream, what would it sound like?
A village in Angola, a big family gathering. We laugh, we sing, we play. Someone hands you an instrument and you join the party. Music is everywhere, all the time, an original vibration. Accordion and guitar resonate, echoes of Portuguese colonization transformed into shared joy. Life circulates in music, simple and immense. You vibrate louder than anywhere else, as if you were finally at home for the first time.

Any anecdotes about Line-up 's career?
Our stage manager has been chasing him for over three years, almost literally. And the complicated thing about living legends is that they get old, sometimes it's too late, sometimes it's too expensive... But this time, the planets aligned. We went to see it in Lausanne, at an African film festival, and it was obvious. A few weeks later, after a few exchanges, we finally received confirmation. Directly at the end of a concert, because we couldn't call him or write to him. You'd think. A legend, a little patience and dreaming, and finally the meeting. This year, Bonga will be there. Bonga is here.
