Soulist
A name that rolls off the tongue, an energy that flows well, and a loyalty that's never wavered. SOULIST is a true buddy who can be found in all the right places: behind the turntables, at Radio Meuh shows for years, in an unexpected back to back or even just to lend a hand. He's experienced everything about the festival - the big stages, the inter-platforms, the teepees, the offs, the two-person mixes, the short and long formats. This year, he's back with a DJ set at Les Joux, in a venue that's close to his heart, like an uncle of sound who's always at the center of the groove.
PROG IS SOMETIMES JUST A PHIL...
Where and when did you first hear it?
I don't remember exactly. He was already part of this Parisian clique we liked, with Souleance, Julien Lebrun, le Mélotron... We invited him quite early on to the Circus, as a DJ set for the offs. Since then, he's remained close, regular and loyal. He's been a resident on La Meuh with his "What the Funk" show, he's made us playlists, he's mixed with us in Paris, at Le Sacré, Le Mazette, Le Barboteur... In short, he's a good buddy with a great sound!
His music in 3 words, or more...?
Funk. Passionate. Driving. He's the funky president, as he likes to be called. A groove lover, committed to his sound, who never gives up. It's all about the fun and the people, and you can feel it in his sets.
If this were the soundtrack to a daydream, what would it sound like?
You'd have to imagine a bunch of mates getting together in a small underground club in London, one of Alexis's secret spots. It would be a group of French buddies crossing paths with the British new jazz scene, and the whole thing would go off like a wildfire. An energy of fun and sharing, with no pressure, just for the fun of it. Until the early hours of the next morning.
Any anecdotes about Line-up 's career?
Soulist is a bit of a festival stalwart. He played at the festival in 2015, with Pierre Wax. He's been back several times, sometimes with Souleance on the main stage, sometimes inter-platform, sometimes just to lend a hand. He even mixed under the teepees last year. This year, he's off at Les Joux, in a format that suits him well. What's more, he'll be acting as a reporter during the festival, capturing interviews at the Kind of Meuh. It's not that we don't know where to put him, it's just that he's good everywhere!
