The first event of the 2025 edition, Side Story invites Senegalese rap duo Def Mama Def. This meeting, in the presence of Baay Sooley (Positive Black Soul) and Mamy Victory, will be an opportunity to explore the group's commitment, both in its lyrics and productions, to its cultural and feminist influences. While we'll look back at Def Mama Def's identity and approach, the discussion will also take on a historical dimension by tracing the evolution of rap in Senegal.

Through the testimony of Baay Sooley, a key player in the emergence of the genre in the 90s, we delve into the beginnings of the Dakar hip-hop movement, its messages, production methods and influence beyond West Africa. We'll also examine the influences of American rap and the impact of local figures such as Fou Malade on the current scene. The aim: to understand how this dynamic has led to the emergence of projects like DMD, between heritage and renewal.
